This video is split up in TWO parts so be sure to watch for the conclusion video! Mr. Snell left such an impact on Mamma Z's school years that she decided to make a tribute in his honor by turning him into a book character! He also served in WWII and his love of education led him to a lifetime of service to youth as a coach, teacher, camp counselor and Eagle Scout. Thank you for your service and the smiles, Mr. Snell! ~ Mamma Z MEIER SNELL, 96, WWII veteran and beloved longtime Jamestown High School (JHS) history teacher and coach whose legendary laid-back style endeared him to two generations of local students, passed peacefully August 9, 2014 after a brief illness in Newport News, VA, where he lived the last 10 years with his daughter and son-in-law.
Born in St. Paul, MN to Philip and Sarah Snell (Reznikovsky) on October 2, 1917, Meiers academic accomplishments include a BA in History from Hamline University and a MA in Education from the University of North Dakota (1956). His love of education led him to a lifetime of service to youth as a coach, teacher, camp counselor and Eagle Scout. As coach, Meier led JHS to the 1969 State Mens Varsity Cross-Country Championship and several regional Womens Track and Field titles. One of Meiers most notable traits was his refusal to be defined by convention. Former students fondly recall that he painted his Volkswagen with beige latex house paint, maintained a ready supply of "real groaner" jokes, and played his violin Sunday mornings in his own inimitable style. Meier was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Bernice, of St. Paul, MN; and his wife, Flora (Aitchison). He leaves a daughter and son-in-law, Heather and David Gauthier of Seaford, VA; grandson Josh D. Frank of Winter Park, CO; granddaughter Carly L. Hopper (Frank) and her husband, Joel, and great-grandchildren; Julia, 16, and Benjamin, 13, of Mankato, MN. A celebration of life service for family and friends will be held at Amory Funeral Home, 410 Grafton Drive, Grafton, VA at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 18, 2014. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). |
